What Is It

What is an
MBBR System?

A Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) is a biological treatment process that suspends free-moving plastic carriers inside the reactor tank. Microorganisms colonize the carrier surfaces, forming a biofilm that breaks down organic matter and ammonia far more efficiently than conventional suspended-growth systems.

LiTENDA's MBBR systems combine high-surface-area bio media, retention screens, mixers, and aeration equipment into a complete package — built to handle high organic loads in a smaller tank footprint, with no need for sludge recirculation or backwashing.

Every project starts with free technical consultation and a system sized to your flow rate and influent quality — our engineers help you select the right carrier type and fill ratio before you order.

What LiTENDA Equipment Does
Inside Your MBBR

Each piece of equipment plays a specific role in maximizing biofilm activity and keeping the reactor running smoothly.

MBBR Bio Media
Component 01
MBBR Bio Media
Free-floating carriers with a protected, high-surface-area structure where bacteria colonize and grow — the engine room of the whole biological process.
MBBR Retention Screen
Component 02
MBBR Retention Screen
Holds carriers inside the reactor tank while allowing treated water to pass through freely, preventing media loss without restricting flow.
MBBR Mixer
Component 03
MBBR Mixer
Keeps carriers in continuous fluidized motion inside the tank, ensuring uniform contact between biofilm and wastewater for consistent treatment performance.
System Flow

MBBR System Working Principle

Wastewater enters the aeration tank and mixes fully with suspended carriers, where biofilm bacteria break down organic matter and ammonia. Aeration keeps both the media and the oxygen supply moving, while a final solid-liquid separation step removes any detached biofilm before discharge.

Why MBBR

Benefits of the MBBR Process

Compared with conventional activated sludge systems, MBBR delivers higher treatment capacity in a smaller footprint with lower operating complexity.

High treatment efficiency — large biofilm surface area and constant carrier-water contact drive faster, more complete pollutant breakdown.
Small footprint — higher volumetric loading means a smaller reactor handles the same wastewater volume as a larger conventional tank.
Strong shock-load resistance — the biofilm buffers sudden spikes in organic or hydraulic load without major performance loss.
Lower sludge production — biofilm renews gradually and settles well, cutting excess sludge volume and disposal costs.
Simple operation — no sludge recirculation loop and no scheduled backwashing, reducing equipment and labor overhead.
Wide applicability — adapts to municipal, industrial, and low-concentration wastewater with the right media and operating setup.
