What Is It

What is a
Bio Block?

Bio Block is a structured filter media extruded from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and welded into a three-dimensional grid. Its distinctive reticular tube structure gives bacteria in wastewater a specialized surface to colonize — and the intentionally rough texture further boosts biofilm adhesion.

LiTENDA Bio Block uses interconnected net tubes welded into square, stackable blocks, making it easy to maintain and almost immune to clogging — even at flow rates between 7,500 and 10,000 liters per hour per square meter of surface area.

The larger the specific surface area, the larger the bacterial population it can support, and the better the treatment outcome. Bio Block also performs as a contact filter for suspended solids: at lower hydraulic loads, particles bind into flocs against the structured surface, with treatment efficiency improving over time as a biofilm web forms between the net elements.

Bio Block Advantages

Every structural detail is engineered to maximize biofilm growth while keeping operation simple, low-maintenance, and chemically resistant.

High Oxygen Transfer Efficiency
The open hexagonal channel design promotes strong air-water contact, keeping dissolved oxygen levels high across the bio-film.
Superior Biofilm Adhesion
A deliberately rough, high-surface-area structure gives bacteria more room to colonize and thrive than smooth-walled alternatives.
Clog-Resistant, Self-Cleaning
The structured channel geometry resists particle buildup and stays clear even under heavy hydraulic loading.
Low Cost, High Performance
A balanced design delivers strong treatment results without the premium price tag of more complex media types.
Durable HDPE Construction
Made from 100% virgin HDPE with no PVC or glue — chemically inert, corrosion-resistant, and biologically non-degradable.
UV-Resistant & Lightweight
Modular blocks resist sun degradation in outdoor towers and stay light enough for easy handling and transport.
Easy Install & Customizable
Blocks stack and link together to fit any tower or tank shape, with custom sizing available beyond standard dimensions.
Self-Supporting Structure
Durable enough to walk or work on directly, the welded grid is rigid enough to be self-supporting once installed.

Four Block Types, One System

LiTENDA Bio Block ships in four structural variants, so you can mix and match coverage, surface area, and structural support to your tower design.

Bio Block Type A - stackable flexible installation
Block A
Stackable & Flexible
Individual blocks can be linked together, giving you flexible installation across irregular tower shapes.
Bio Block Type B - high surface area
Block B
High Surface Area
A denser channel structure maximizes surface area for biofilm development where treatment load is highest.
Bio Block Type C - structured hexagonal channel
Block C
Hexagonal Channel Design
Structured hexagonal channels are optimized for flow distribution and water retention across the block.
Bio Block Type D - durable HDPE self-supporting
Block D
Self-Supporting HDPE
Built from durable HDPE construction, this variant is fully self-supporting with no extra structural frame needed.

Mounting & Support

Stable Installation, Every Time

Bio Block sections are mounted using a simple L-support bracket system, available in large and small fittings to match different tower configurations.

Bio Block L-support mounting detail

Each block section locks into place using a large or small L-support bracket, keeping the structure stable and self-supporting once installed — no separate frame or scaffolding required inside the tower.

Large support fitting for primary structural anchoring across the main grid sections.
Small support fitting for securing individual block units along the tower wall or floor.
Modular linking between blocks lets you scale coverage up or down without redesigning the whole tower.
Why Bio Block

Benefits of Structured Trickling Media

Bio Block's structured design solves the two biggest problems with trickling filter media: clogging and limited biofilm surface area.

Maximized biofilm surface area — more bacterial colonization means more effective organic load removal per cubic meter of media.
Near-zero clogging — the open hexagonal channel structure keeps flow paths clear even under high hydraulic loads.
Decades of service life — chemically inert HDPE construction resists the degradation that shortens the life of other media types.
Flexible deployment — works as a trickling filter, submerged aerated filter, or moving bed media depending on your process.

Common Questions

Bio Block FAQ

How does Bio Block work?
Wastewater trickles or flows through the structured hexagonal grid. Bacteria colonize the rough HDPE surface and form a biofilm, which breaks down organic pollutants as water passes through. Suspended solids are also captured by contact filtration against the structured surface.
What's the difference between Bio Block and MBBR media?
Bio Block is a fixed, structured media — typically installed as a stacked grid inside a trickling filter tower or submerged filter. MBBR media are small, free-floating carriers that move within an aerated tank. Bio Block suits fixed-tower designs; MBBR suits tank-based moving bed systems.
Does Bio Block clog easily?
No — the open hexagonal channel structure is specifically designed to resist clogging, even at flow rates up to 10,000 liters per hour per square meter of surface area, and is self-cleaning under normal operation.
Can Bio Block be customized in size?
Yes. Standard blocks are 550×550×550mm, with a 280×280×490mm option also available. Fully custom dimensions can be produced to match your specific tower or tank geometry.
How long does Bio Block last?
Made from 100% virgin HDPE with no PVC or glue, Bio Block is biologically and chemically non-degradable and is rated for over 20 years of service life under normal operating conditions.
