Composition of the MBBR System
The composition of an MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) system typically includes the following components:
- Reactor Tank – The main chamber where wastewater treatment takes place.
- Biofilm Carriers (Media) – Small plastic carriers that provide a large surface area for beneficial microorganisms to grow.
- Aeration System – Includes blowers and diffusers that supply oxygen and keep the media in motion.
- Screen or Sieve – Prevents the biofilm carriers from escaping the reactor tank.
- Influent Distribution System – Ensures wastewater is evenly distributed inside the reactor.
- Outlet/Clarification System – Separates treated water from suspended solids before discharge or further treatment.
- Sludge Handling System – Collects and removes excess sludge generated during the treatment process.
- Control System – Monitors and controls airflow, pumps, and overall system performance.
Working Principle of the MBBR System
- Wastewater Entry
Wastewater enters the MBBR reactor tank containing suspended biofilm carriers. - Biofilm Growth
Beneficial microorganisms grow on the surface of the plastic media, forming a biological layer called a biofilm. - Continuous Media Movement
An aeration system or mechanical mixing keeps the carriers constantly moving inside the reactor, ensuring proper contact between wastewater, oxygen, and microorganisms. - Biological Treatment
The microorganisms consume and decompose organic matter, ammonia, and other pollutants in the wastewater. - Oxygen Supply
Air diffusers provide oxygen required for aerobic biological treatment and help maintain media movement. - Separation Process
After treatment, the mixed liquor flows to a settling or clarification tank where sludge is separated from the treated water. - Treated Water Discharge
The purified water is discharged or sent for further filtration and disinfection if required.
Key Advantage
The MBBR system provides high treatment efficiency, requires less space, produces lower sludge volume, and is suitable for municipal as well as industrial wastewater treatment applications.
